Summary

Grayl Geopress is a great portable water purifier that pack in a lot of features that most people find useful for their activities. It is highly recommended by many, especially for people who are backpackers or campers.

Grayl Geopress Overview

Grayl Geopress

The Grayl Geopress is a bottle based water purifier and it is the newest addition to Grayl’s portable and versatile water purifiers. It is a direct successor to the Grayl Ultralight with many significant improvements over it.

The Grayl Geopress has many improved features over its predecessor such as a larger water capacity, Geopress Drink Cap, SimpleVent air vent, improved water filtration, and cross-contamination prevention.

What you get with the Grayl Geopress package is pretty simple. You get the Geopress itself and one water purifier cartridge. However, Grayl does offer a free camp cup when purchased directly.

Key Features

The Grayl Geopress is no doubt, a great water purifier, but what makes it great is the unique features that it has over the others. So, we are going to discuss that right now.

Design

Starting with the physical appearance, the Grayl Geopress is much larger than the Ultralight with a bigger capacity of over 24 oz or 710 ml which is a nice improvement. There are rubber grip pads on the side, bottom, and the top lid of the bottle itself. This improves handling and reduces the chances of the bottle slipping.

Durability

In terms of durability, the Grayl Geopress is made tough and Grayl claims that it is able to withstand 10-feet drops onto concrete. Although some users do find the rubber materials like the ones connected to the SimpleVent drink cap may not be as durable and degrade over time.

Filter Capability

The Grayl Geopress is similar to any bottle water filter with an outer refill for unfiltered water and an inner chamber for storing the filtered water. The inner chamber also has the purifier cartridge at the bottom. The included cartridge can last for about 350 uses and it is replaceable.

It is able to remove and filter any waterborne pathogens and micro materials such as bacteria, viruses, microplastics, chemicals, and heavy metals. The filter also improves taste and smell.

Filtration Speed

In terms of speed, Grayl claims that the Geopress purifies and filters contaminated water in as short as 8 seconds. It is still relatively faster than the Grayl Ultralight which is rated to filter within 15 seconds.

Many people find this pretty useful in certain situations where they need to obtain clean water as quickly as possible. However, based on recent tests by others, the Grayl Geopress is able to filter water in about 10 seconds. Overall, the performance is great nonetheless.

SimpleVent Cap

One of the most significant features that the Grayl Geopress that is improved over the Grayl Ultralight is the SimpleVent cap. It is a screw cap that covers the drinking spout and it has several functions as follows:

When filtering water, the SimpleVent cap can function as an air ventilation which releases air pressure from within. This also prevents water from bursting out of the container during the process.

Cross-Contamination Protection

The second feature of the SimpleVent cap and perhaps one of the most important improvements is the protection against cross-contamination. Cross-contamination can happen even by accident so the SimpleVent prevents that from happening.

This is done by completely covering the drinking spout thus preventing any bacteria or dirt from entering. As long as the user does not touch the spout, the water will remain bacteria-free.

Given all of these, the key features we just discovered on the Grayl Geopress is great. There are some minor issues regarding the Grayl Geopress and one of those is the ease of use as some people discovered it to be difficult to handle like accidentally spilling the water while filtering.

Therefore, I do recommend reading the instruction manual first before handling the Grayl Geopress on your first trip as it will help a lot in the long run.

Consideration Factors

So far in our Grayl Geopress review, we have finished discussing about its key features and what benefits you are able to use. Now the question, is the Grayl Geopress the right one for you? Technically, this is a great portable water purifier that you can bring with you everywhere. However, there are some things you need to consider first before purchasing one. You may want to refer below.

Contaminants to be filtered

If you do travel to places where your only choice of clean water is buying single-use water bottles, then this one is a game-changer for you. Considering the Geopress’ large capacity and faster water filtration performance, the Geopress can provide enough clean water for you in no time. This can also save you money from buying bottled water.

Budget Consideration

If you already own the Grayl Ultralight, then there’s no need to upgrade to the Geopress given its expensive price point of around $89. However, if you do see value in the Grayl Geopress’s advanced features and larger capacity, then it is worth considering.
