Which Category Should I Choose?
Choosing a drinking water system could be as easy as just getting a smartphone from Bestbuy. Here are some simple rules that I apply when I look for a water filter for my house.
Identify Your Water Contaminants
Everything starts with identifying the problem. Firstly, understand which water pollutants appear in the water source.
There are a few ways to check the water quality of your source water.
- Consumer Confidence Report (CCR): You will receive this report from the local council. If you did not receive it, head on the website to download your own copy.
- Water Quality Test Kit: You can purchase a test kit for less than $10 to perform an initial check on the quality of your water. The test includes chlorine, bacteria, pesticides, lead, nitrates and water hardness.
- Local Laboratory Test: Alternatively, you can send your source water to a local laboratory to perform a contamination test. This will be the most accurate option.
Everyone has their own budget when investing in the first filtration system. How much are you willing to spend initially and subsequent years?
When you are budgeting your purchase, you need to factor in not just the initial purchase price, the annual maintenance cost is the one that you need to pay on a yearly basis.
In WorldofWaterFilter, we include the annual maintenance cost on all systems to simplified your budget calculation.
We have experience on some cheap water filter which required higher yearly cost because of the frequent replacement of the filter cartridge.
Do you know that you are paying higher in maintenance cost on a pitcher ($80) compared to a reverse osmosis system($50)?
Student, Tenant Or Home Owner?
Student loves water pitchers. As they are staying in dorms or renting a room, water pitcher is super portable which you can fill up and bring to your room.
Tenants are more likely to choose countertop and faucet water filter. These filters are more comprehensive, little to no installation and no drilling is required for the filter to work.
Homeowners however can invest in a better filtration system such as under sink water filter as they the most sophisticated filter in removing contaminants. This will require drilling and complicated installation under the counter.
Water pitcher and faucet filter are the best for one or two people. This is due to the short filter cartridge lifespan and its limited capability.
It will cost you more to maintain a pitcher rather than a reverse osmosis filter while the latter has more comprehensive filtration capability.
If you have a larger household, it is advisable to buy an under the sink or countertop filter system. These systems are catered for huge capacity and remove more contaminants.
However, some of the maintenance cost is cheaper than a pitcher.
